The famous mausoleum has been built by the emperor of India Shah Jahan (Muhammad Khurram), for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal (Arjumand Banu Begum) after her death in 1631. It is situated on the Southern bank of Yamuna, the river considered sacred in India. Fog forms often above the river during the coldest days of winter in January and February which frequently obscures the mausoleum at dawn and disappears when the sun warms the air up.
